SUPERJAIL’S FLAWLESS ANIMATION APPRECIATION POST
•Average frame rate for this show - 34-40 fps
•Average frame rate for general (flash) animated TV series -20-24 fps
———-
ok I’m going to freak out for a second and just say as an animation major I study this show constantly based on it’s mastery level of using the principles of animation in action in motions. There are a large number of people who can’t stomach the content of the show (which is ok) but those of us who can watch it know how it’s basically porn for aspiring animators. While only being paid an Adult Swim salary, the Superjail crew display an overwhelming amount of talent and skill that people would normally expect to see in the old hand-drawn department of Disney or something. Also, IT IS MADE WITH FLASH. DO I EVEN NEED TO GET INTO WHY THAT’S SO STUNNING AND SIGNIFICANT!?

The first season was produced in Augenblick Studios in 2008 and is now being produced in Titmouse Studios since season 2. The animation in this series has been described as “barouque and complicated and hard to take in at a single viewing” since day one. I think I’m going to stop now otherwise I’m never going to. Ally out.

Is it just me, or does it seem like Armin is going through more of a living hell than all the others?

Let me start with the fact that Armin joined the Cadet Corps and Survey Corps because he had no family left. And if you go back to the first few episodes, especially the episode where he states Eren’s case to the Garrisons, he talks about trying to prove his strength and equality to his friends. Now, if you ask me, that is a pretty brave move. He joined the Survey Corps to prove himself, even though he knew that he was far weaker than everyone else. I mean, he’s pretty much the only person who didn’t get into the top ten for the Cadet Corps, right?

So let’s think about it like this. Armin is terrified to begin with. He had multiple near death experiences with titans, and one in which he was almost swallowed by one, only to be pulled out by his best friend, and then see his best friend be eaten. Now, I don’t know about you, but that’s enough to make me go crazy. Then he goes on the Female Titan mission, where he is closely encountered with Annie in her titan form, almost sees his comrades killed, but still manages to figure out that the titan is Annie before anyone else. Fast forward a little to after he is in Levi’s squad, and he is constantly having to assist in experimenting on his life long best friend, where he has to watch him lose complete control over himself, remembering that Levi said he would instantly kill Eren if he became a problem. Later on, he has to dress up as Historia because he looks frail and weak enough to be her. He is harassed and pretty much raped by the creepy ass merchant man, and his comrade is sitting there watching him in tears, unable to help him. Then fast forward a little more, and he has to shoot a woman who was about to kill his comrade, and instead of mourning for her and thinking it through, he is forced to go straight back to the mission, which made him feel like more of a terrible person than he already thought he was. After he gets back to where they were staying, he lets all his emotion out to the point of vomiting and shaking violently. Mikasa came out and tried to comfort him, and Armin asked Mikasa if she ever felt that bad about killing the man when she was younger. When he realizes what he asked her, he immediately regretted it even though it wasn’t much of a big deal to Mikasa, because he felt like he had hurt her when he said it. So he is sitting here, crying, vomiting, shaking, and on top of that, he is trying to apologize to Mikasa all at the same time. Then Levi comes out and tries to reason with him, which makes him ask even more questions, like why he didn’t hesitate when he pulled the trigger, or if that girl had a family and all of that.

He went through all of this just to prove that he is his life long friends’ equals.

Now if you ask me, that is fucking impressive.

This is dedicated to all of you Armin haters out there. I want all of you to fucking read this.

I agree with all of this except “and pretty much raped.” I’d call it sexual assault, but it’s not rape or “pretty much rape.”

I’d never undermine other people’s trials, but I do think that Armin’s been through some serious shit in this series and people who still think he’s a weakling/baby/wimp/whatever need to take another look at everything he’s been through and re-evaluate his character. He’s grown a lot over the course of the story.

erasure of Asian people and characters is very deep rooted in American media and goes all the way back to conception—don’t let it persist!

Important even when you’re excited about this movie!

good points, but please for the love of god, realize that the original marvel comic was a fucking horrible racist disaster of the most unacceptable calibre that rode on the tail ends of the 90s ninja craze and the budding 00s anime craze.

I still have no idea why Disney chose to adapt this MASSACRE of a comic book series to film, but what I have heard is that they’ve cherry picked the best parts of it and created something great from what was absolute dregs before.

And honestly I think a movie portraying a much, much more racially diverse -even if it is fictional- world, where everyone lives unquestionably together and showing what that might just be like, is a pretty good goddamn thing that I think could stand to be shown and portrayed to kids of this generation. You aren’t seeing the white kids appropriating anybody’s culture, you’re seeing a bunch of kids who are friends and race is not a divisive factor between them. I sort of think, in media, portraying/normalizing these sorts of things is really important and I think that is what BH6 is doing here: normalizing these sorts of situations.

When I say “normalize”, I mean, in media, and especially media for impressionable children, things that could be anything from diverse/inclusive groups of people from different races, to things like different genders, or different body types, being shown as “normal.” You put them on screen and tell a kid “this is normal.” and this can be shown in a way to goad children into doing what advertisers/media producers want, but it can also be used as a force of good. It’s about time we start using this media influence to spread stuff like this, instead of “buy this toy, wear this type of clothes, girls behave this way and boys have to do this or they aren’t normal”.

baby steps, man. There was a shitstorm when Laika released a movie with an openly gay character. But when they did the same thing a year after for the Boxtrolls, only the stupid old people got pissy about it. See? It’s starting to become normalized.

In the future I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s now easier for more diverse casts to exist, not just because it’s now been done once, but because the people, like me, who work in production, can point to things like this and say “see? They did it in Paranorman, the world didn’t explode. It’ll be fine.” or “see? the movie didn’t have to change for a bunch of different races to fit in fine. It’s not a big deal.” It’s been normalized. Somebody has to set a precedent. Wouldn’t it be great if shows were as diverse as this, not because they had some sort of agenda to, but just because that’s… yknow, normal?

The replies to this is pure gold! Again, not sure why Disney chose to make a movie abut this trash comic but the fact that they are making something beautiful out of it says a lot. Mix races in cultures is movies in a positive way is rare. Mixed CHILDREN (Hiro being half White, half Japanese) is amazing.

So please, sit down and rethink your argument. Why support a racist comic and get mad when Disney tries to make it diverse?

I was kind of waiting for people to speak up on this, to be honest. What I know about the comics sounds incredibly…problematic, to say the very least. No idea why Disney would pick up that source material, but I’m glad they are being loose as hell with adapting this and trying to make it a separate product. I don’t know. I can see both sides of the argument.

I’ve received a lot of letters from artists asking to check out their artwork and their blog, and I’ve noticed that a lot of them openly write unhealthy amounts of negative comments about their artwork, it was super depressing, honestly.  :(
Confidence plays a very very important role as an artist, it’s what helps us learn and grow without the constant feeling of doubt and jealousy!  You are a unique individual who must go down your own unique path, and as scary as it sounds, you can’t rely on others to hold your hand all the way through.  You are the only one who can get yourself to where you need to go, and beating up your artwork is not the way!  Trust yourself and your abilities to make a change, and you can do anything!!

Love your art, love yourself!

I was actually going to write a long post about this yesterday, but this lovely comic sums up all my points perfectly! Artists, please read this! It can be hard to break out of your bad “my art sucks” habits, but you gotta try. I used to do that ALL THE TIME, but a few years ago I made a conscious effort to change and I feel my art is much better for it. It’s not easy, it’ll take practice, but it’s worth it. Love your art!

Another goodun!
